News/Announcements:

17 Dec 2006

I've surrendered to the reality that this isn't going to happen this year or really even next. earliest possible event date is sometime in 2008 - there PBP next year, and I have a company to help run and a house to work on - new realities here in the Pacific Northwest... I know there's a number of you gung-ho on this epic idea, but you'll just have to be patient while I get all my ducks in a row...

Yeah, I'm waffling.

But it being the end of January and me having done no scouting whatsoever, and visualizing some pretty big things happenning over the summer, I'm wondering where I'm going to find the time. Nevermind that I've done absolutely no prizehunting or anything yet. Send me email, kick my butt into gear. My states page tells me there's a couple hundred people a month checking this page out...

Date is looking more and more like early October 2006 all the time. June conflicted with the Transamerica Cycling Classic and potentially the Cascade 1200, so I decided that wouldn't work. October conflicts with theCycle Messenger World Championships, but I don't think that will be that much of an issue. I'm hoping to get some course recon done in the next month or two, to see how my checkpoint ideas on paper match up to reality.

Locations currently under consideration for use as checkpoints include:

On paper, all of these locations are bike-accessible (and legal to ride to, according to ONP regs). I may use all or just some of these, or substitute others after some recon. Do not mistake this for a final checkpoint list, which will be posted on a separate page once decisions have been made. Already these checkpoints may pose substantial difficulty - almost all of these points involve riding on unpaved roads, both Deer Park/Blue Mountain and Obstruction Peak are about 6000 feet, and the final ride to Boulder Creek is a short bike-legal trail. Needless to say, recon will be fun. I'll be doing recon in October if possible, and definitely in early spring, to confirm checkpoint accessibility and to determine the specifics of checkpoints, as most (if not all) will be unmanned, and therefore riders will likely be required to answer questions about the location or objects in the general area.

So I had this crazy idea, see...
